AI writing assistants compared: what free plans actually cover

ToolsKit Editorial Updated September 9, 2026

Free tiers, tone and content limits across popular writing assistants — plus a fair A/B test for your own work.

Writing assistants were the first AI category to become boringly mainstream, and that is exactly when the differences between them started mattering. The models are similar under the hood; the free tiers, the tone controls and the export path are not.

What to compare

  • Free-tier daily limit. Some reset hourly, some weekly. A generous-looking monthly number can feel blocked exactly when you need it.
  • Tone control. A marketing team and a legal team need opposite defaults. Check whether you can pin a voice instead of restating it in every prompt.
  • Where the writing lands. Drafting inside a dedicated app is fine until you need the text in Google Docs, a CMS or an email tool. The copy-paste cost is a real cost.

Quick field guide

Grammarly remains the strongest default when your bottleneck is correctness and polish on existing writing. Copy.ai leans into marketing copy and short-form generation with templates tuned for campaigns. Jasper targets teams that want brand voice kept consistent across many writers. If you mostly prompt an assistant from scratch and edit by hand, a general chat tool like ChatGPT or Claude may already cover you — the writing assistant is then an interface, not a capability.

The fair A/B test

Take one piece of your real writing — a product page, a customer email, a draft report. Run the same brief through each candidate, then grade blind on three things: does the tone match your brand, would you edit more than half of it, and could you get the output into your workflow in under a minute. That last question decides more subscriptions than the model name.

Every tool above has a written review on our AI directory with the free-tier limits and pricing model listed — compare them there before you compare them in your wallet.
